You have complete control of when you want to shift or engage a gear since there is no computer controlling the transmission. With this comes many benefits: manual transmissions are less complicated than automatic ones (meaning they’re easier on you during repairs), they create a sense of connection between driver and car, and because there are fewer moving parts, they tend to have greater longevity.
At the same time, this means that shifting can become a chore – especially in high traffic conditions. Not to mention that it comes at the cost of fuel economy since you may have to switch gears frequently and it is sometimes more complicated than it needs to be (especially in lower gears).
