What’s the Similarity?
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay appear to be very different when you first look at them, but some similarities exist. For starters, both systems allow you to use your car’s built-in screen and audio system to access various apps and functions.
Both also come with voice-activated controls, which let you access certain features without taking your hands off the wheel. For instance, you can use voice commands to play music, make calls, send text messages, etc.
What’s the Difference?
The main difference between Auto and CarPlay is that the former is powered by Google, while the latter is powered by Apple. Auto has access to Google Maps and other Google apps, while CarPlay has access to the App Store and other Apple apps.
Android Auto also has a few extra features, such as replying to text messages with your voice and seeing upcoming appointments in your calendar.
Stability:
Apple CarPlay provides a better experience when it comes to stability. It rarely crashes or glitches, while Android Auto has a tendency to freeze or lag. Since Apple’s software is written and tested specifically for a small set of handsets they wholly created in-house, it’s more likely to work perfectly on your car.
However, Android Auto is constantly improving and updating with new features and support for more devices.
User Interface:
A significant difference between the two is their user interface. CarPlay’s UI is straightforward and easy to use, with large buttons that make it easy to control while you’re driving. Android Auto’s UI is a bit more complex, with smaller buttons and a lot of text.
CarPlay is built on the same design principles as iOS, so it benefits from them. It’s more user-friendly, more attractive, and easier to operate. Android Auto isn’t a bad app per se; it’s just that it doesn’t have the same level of refinement as CarPlay does. CarPlay also allows for a greater degree of personalization than Android Auto does.
Voice Assistant:
A responsive, more comprehensive voice assistant is another key difference. Google Now is more innovative and better at understanding natural language than Siri. It means that you can issue more complicated commands to Android Auto without worrying about them not being understood.
Google Now is smarter, has better functionality, and will understand you better. However, Apple is trying to close the gap with iOS 11, which features a more natural-sounding Siri. So, watch that space!
Messaging:
Ever since Telegram dropped support for CarPlay, the number of messaging apps supported by the two systems has been pretty much neck-and-neck. Both support WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, and other lesser-known apps.
However, Android Auto has a slight edge in this category, as it also supports Google Hangouts, which is excellent for business users.

So, what’s the verdict? If you value a ton of features and an interface that’s packed with options, then Android Auto is probably right up your alley. But if you want a streamlined experience with as little distraction as possible while driving, go for Apple CarPlay. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference.
